Laura’s abstract landscape paintings are rooted in her love of wild and untamed and places, stemming from her early connections to the forests and coastlines of the Pacific Northwest.
In her recent work she has focused on imprints and footprints left on the land by living creatures, natural forces and time. These have shaped and marked the landscape over millennia and continue to pose questions and leave traces.
When painting Laura uses layers of oil and cold wax medium to build up and then uncover subtleties, nuances, light and texture. She works intuitively: there is not a plan but there is intention. The paintings are constantly changing and evolving.
‘Working in this way allows me to tap into connections with a particular place at a deep level, to uncover, unearth and go beneath the surface to explore subliminal associations with the landscape. The gradual build-up of layers which are later scratched away allows for instinctual marks and a digging that goes on as I try to connect, to make sense of the landscape’.
Laura is an Artist Network Member and tutor at the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol and a full member of the Society of Women Artists. She exhibits widely and has work in private collections in the UK, Europe, Australia and the USA. She regularly exhibits in the annual open exhibitions of both the RWA and the Bath Society of Artists.
